What is the difference between cartoon and comic?

Same meaning, different words? Or altogether different in style, materials, approach?

A comic comes in written format, as in a comic book. A cartoon is in animated, visual format with sound etc.

Actually, this isn't entirely true. "Cartoon" is an artistic style, whereas "comic" is a type (or genre) of art. Your definition of "cartoon" above refers to animation. Whereas the word itself really only means that something is drawn in a humorous, simplified, and abstract style. "Comics" as an art form, however, refers to pictures (usually cartoons, but not always) arranged in sequential order, sometimes with words, to tell a story. Try and look up Scott McCloud's definition of Comics. It's really good and explains the difference way better than I.
