Company Profile:
Aviation Supplies & Academics, Inc. (ASA) develops and markets aviation supplies, software, and books for pilots, flight instructors, flight engineers, airline professionals, air traffic controllers, flight attendants, aviation technicians and enthusiasts. Established in 1947, ASA also provides ...
A special type of pliers used to twist safety wire. Duckbill pliers have long handles and wide, flat jaws with serrations to grip the wire, but they do not have jaws for cutting the wire.
Industry:Aviation
A special type of pressure altimeter used to send a signal to the air traffic controller on the ground, showing the pressure altitude the aircraft is flying. Pressure altitude is the altitude shown on the altimeter when its barometric scale is adjusted to the standard sea level pressure of 29.92 inches of mercury, or 1013.2 millibars. The altimeter provides a signal showing the altitude in one-hundred-foot increments to the radar beacon transponder. The transponder sends this information in coded form to the ground radar, where it shows up on the radar screen in numbers beside the radar return from the aircraft.
Industry:Aviation
A special type of punch used to mark the center of a rivet hole when the punch is stuck through an existing rivet hole. The diameter of the shank of the punch near the tip is the same as that of the rivet hole, and the end of the punch is flat; but there is a short, sharp point protruding from its center. This point makes a small impression in the metal that is used to start a drill at the location the rivet hole is to be drilled.
Industry:Aviation
A special type of ramjet engine whose fuel can be ignited while the vehicle is moving at a supersonic speed.
Industry:Aviation
A special type of round nut with holes, notches, or projections around its periphery. Spanner nuts are turned with a hook spanner or pin spanner.
Industry:Aviation
A special type of semiconductor device made of P-type silicon doped with boron and N-type silicon doped with arsenic. When light strikes the PN junction, electrons flow through the load circuit from the N-silicon to the P-silicon.
Industry:Aviation
A special type of semiconductor device that allows electrons to flow through it in one direction, but normally opposes flow in the opposite direction. If the voltage across the zener diode, in the direction that does not allow flow, is increased to a specific value, the zener diode will break down, and electrons will flow through it. The voltage at which a zener diode breaks down is called the zener voltage. Zener diodes are also called avalanche diodes.
Industry:Aviation
A special type of semiconductor device used to protect a piece of electronic equipment from being damaged by spikes of voltage. A thyrector contains two zener diodes, connected together back to back. When the circuit voltage is below that for which the diodes are rated, no current flows through them. But if a spike of voltage occurs in the circuit, one of the diodes breaks down and conducts the spike to ground. Since the zener diodes are connected back to back, the thyrector protects against spikes of voltage of either polarity.
Industry:Aviation
A special type of semiconductor device whose resistance varies as the voltage across it changes. A varistor is sometimes called a voltage-dependent resistor (VDR).
Industry:Aviation
A special type of turbofan engine installed on an aircraft in such a way that it can be pivoted to direct its thrust in a vertical direction. Lift fans are used on some types of V/STOL (vertical, or short takeoff and landing) aircraft.
