A method of manufacturing inspection in which only a certain percentage of the products are checked. The products to be checked are selected from the production line in a random fashion, so those checked are typical of the entire production run.

A method of measuring the contents in parts per million of various chemical elements in a sample of oil. A sample of the oil is burned in an electric arc, and the resulting light is analyzed with a spectroscope which identifies the chemical elements in the oil and gives an indication of the amount of each element.

A method of measuring the hardness of metal. A hardened steel sphere is pressed into the surface of the metal by a specific force and is held for a specified period of time. The force is removed and the diameter of the indentation caused by the ball is measured with a special microscope. The larger the diameter of the dent, the softer the metal.

A method of molding laminated reinforced plastic components. The reinforced resin is laid up over a form having the required shape and is covered with a vacuum bag. Air is pumped out of the bag, and the entire assembly is placed in an autoclave where the temperature is raised and the air pressure is increased. The pressure inside the autoclave forces the plastic resin into the reinforcing material and forces out any air left in the resin.

A method of molding thermosetting resins. A mold is opened and heated, and resin is put in it. The mold is then closed, and pressure is applied. The resin flows under pressure and completely fills the cavity of the mold. The mold is kept closed and heated until the resin is completely cured.

A method of navigating an aircraft in which the direction and speed of movement of the aircraft are determined by graphically computing the effect of the wind on the aircraft. A flight computer is used to plot the true airspeed and true heading against the wind direction and velocity to find the true course, or track, and the ground speed of the aircraft.
