Components of the atmosphere composed of solid or liquid matter. Particles may be both released from the earth's surface, such as dust or smoke, or formed in the atmosphere, as in rain or ice particles or sulfate aerosol. The particles in the atmosphere are usually defined in terms of their size, or diameter. Particles less than 100 μm in diameter are referred to as aerosol particles. These are aerodynamically stable and settle out only slowly (strictly speaking, the term aerosol refers to the gas–particle colloidal system, not just the particulate phase). The aerosol is usually divided into three modes: the Aitken mode (diameter less than 0. 5 μm), the accumulation mode (0. 5–2. 0 μm), and the coarse mode (greater than 2 μm). The Aitken and accumulation modes are collectively referred to as fine particles. The larger particles of the coarse mode compose clouds and hydrometeors such as rain and sleet, which precipitate out. See'' also'' particle.
Industry:Weather
Component of the wind velocity directed inward toward the center of an atmospheric system.
Industry:Weather
Component of the wind at a point in a direction along a radius vector from the center of a circulating wind system.
Industry:Weather
Compact sea ice that is attached to the shore or to anchoring points on the sea bed. It is a type of fast ice, and may sometimes be rafted ice or ice that has been beached by wind, tides, currents, or by ice pressure.
Industry:Weather
Communications over a single wire, where only one bit is transmitted at a time. In the past this has typically meant a communication line to a printing device, such as a terminal or printer, with the expectation that the characters are all printable or printer/display characters. Today, however, a serial communication does not guarantee use of only printable characters.
Industry:Weather
Communication where the sender and receiver share a clock signal, and data are constantly being transmitted, even if the data are only an idle pattern (indicating no data are present).
Industry:Weather
Common term for a light snow shower, lasting for only a short period of time.
Industry:Weather
Colloquially, a fall of rain or snow in very light amount; a sprinkle, or snow flurry.
